                      URANUS Nationwide Watches

Astronomy Ireland ran Nationwide Uranus Watches around Ireland at 8pm on November 13.  This watch was made even more exciting by the unexpected flare up of Comet Holmes which has graced our heavens for the last few weeks.

Below is a list of the locations where watches took place

Co.Carlow - Kilerig Golf Club or IT Carlow? - Gerry Moloney

Co. Clare - Kilmihil - Angus Sealy

Co. Cork  - John F. Kennedy Park, Centre Park Road. Martin Lynch

Co. Donegal, Kilpeak/Glenswilly Graveyard Carpark, Letterkenny,  Seamus Byron

Dublin - Phoenix Park, car park at Papal Cross - Ben Emmet

Co. Louth Dundalk -Blackrock

Unfortunately the skies remained cloudy over the North Louth area throughout the day. This continued and only very short breaks took place during the watch. As a result only 13 people turned out. However everyone did get to see Comet Holmes for a short time between the clouds. Uranus was not on view.
I explained to those present about the comet and its varying location in the sky, so that they could find it on a clearer night.  I also explained the types and workings of various telescopes, the inadequacies of the many Christmas scopes on sale and the importance of binoculars.
So despite the cloud a interesting and informative night was had by all.

Co. Tipperarary, Dunnes Stores carpark, Waterford Rd. Clonmel

Ray Parle reported cloudy skies on the night although there had been quite a bit of interest in the event.
