               Solstice report 21st December

Click on all images below to enlarge (more beneath David Moore's report)

The first photo (AISolstice1) shows the scene just before the Sun rose.

You can see the first stone (which doubles as a sun dial and I was able to show the crowd how to tell the time to the nearest few minutes using it!) is in the foreground. The second stone is in the distance. It's much bigger but at this distance (150 metres) it just looks like a small 'shark's tooth' just to the left of the top of the nearer stone.

In the 2nd, 3rd and 4th photos you can see the Sun rising along the left edge of the distant stone. It's aligned so it looks like the Sun 'rolls' up the distant stone.

I used flash in some of the photos to try to light up the nearer stone.

It is difficult to get the lighting right with the brilliant disk of the Sun in the same frame as objects in the foreground but I am fairly pleased with the results.
