Fun and food under the Stars

The first of the Summer Star-B-Qs took place on Friday April 28 in the GAA grounds in Roundwood, Co. Wicklow.  What a night it was!!  This event it was decided would take place on either April 28 or 29 whichever looked best as regards the weather forecast.  Fortunately the 28 was picked as being the best.  In hindsight it was an inspired pick as it was cloudy on the Saturday and indeed did cloud over later in the evening on Friday.

The night kicked off with a lecture on the Universe by Astronomy Ireland Chairman, David Moore.  This was followed by and excellent lecture by AI member Emlyn Jones.  Outside Tony Ryan kept the hungry crowds entertained with his "Naked Eye Walk Through the Heavens".  The Telescope Viewing session was ably administered by David Grennan whose handout informed people on what there was to see in the night sky.  Astronomy Ireland member Eamonn O'Fearchain set up a big screen onto which he projected images of objects that his telescope was trained on for all to see.  The International Space Station duly obliged and flew past at the appointed time to cheers and clapping of the assembled crowd.

This year the barbeque was manned by some of our volunteers who valiantly fed the 200 or so people at the event.

It was a great night and a wonderful event!  We are already preparing for the next Star-B-Q on August 26 so we hope to see you there.
