Search on for Irish meteorite said to be worth nearly $130,000

Astronomers in Ireland are looking for a meteorite that could be worth nearly $130,00 after a meteor shower last week.

Astronomers in Ireland are on the look out for a meteorite that could be worth about $129,000, after a meteor shower Wednesday night.

David Moore, chairman of Astronomy Ireland, the national astronomy club, told the Herald that the discovery of a meteorite would be rare. Only three meteorites have been found in Ireland in the past 200 years.

The last meteorite was found in Ireland in 1999 near Leighlin Bridge in Carlow. A handful of the shattered fragment were valued at €100,000.

Astronomy Ireland’s switchboard has been jammed with calls from the public since the fireball blazed across the sky.

"The meteorite will stand out because it has a burnt, smooth exterior," said Moore.

"People can pick it up. There is no kryptonite or any crazy substance that would poison or radiate a person."

The group is asking for those who saw the latest shower to visit www.astronomy.ie and fill out a Fireball Report Form, which will allow experts to trace its path and identify possible landing sites.
