Astronomy Ireland member Martin Lambert is co-ordinating the Cavan activities for Earth Hour at the lower car park, Cavan Swimming Pool in Cavan Town on Saturday, March 28, (8.30-9.30pm).

Martin has organised a telescope watch for the public and will be available at the car park from 7.30pm. Hopefully the weather will be clear! Everyone is welcome, from amateurs to advanced astronomers and those who have only a casual interest in the hobby.

Astronomy Ireland will keep a constant update on locations and events happening in the Cavan area www.astronomy.ie.

Earth Hour

Some 2140 cities, towns and municipalities across 82 countries are switching off their lights at 8.30pm on Saturday to show that they are committed to halting global warming. Unneccessary lighting and electronics accounts for a significant fraction of wasted energy (and therefore taxpayers’ money). We should be aware of the environmental importance of this, but also of the financial strain it can put on current economies.

Astronomy Ireland will be out during Earth Hour to highlight the issue of bad lighting in towns and cities, how it wastes energy and money, and how it prevents us seeing some of the wonders of the night sky. Thankfully, some objects in the sky will be able to pierce through the light pollution, including Saturn, some star clusters and some of the brighter constellations.
