£12m Spent on Council Staff Pensions

Belfast City Council spent almost £12 million on employees' pensions last year, more than anywhere else in Northern Ireland. A total of £44.64 per head of population was spent on all staff at the local authority, said a TaxPayers' Alliance report. Matthew Sinclair, director of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "These gold-plated retirement deals have all but disappeared in the private sector and it simply isn't sustainable to keep the system as it is. "These figures show the urgent need to reform the outdated Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and to tackle the growing trend of councillors joining."

Value Of Belfast Nightspots Plummet

A number of popular Belfast nightspots are now worth about a tenth of what they were bought for five years ago. According to an administrator’s report in 2007, with the property boom at its peak, CDC Leisure bought Katy Daly's, The Limelight, Spring & Airbrake and Auntie Annie's for £13.5m. CDC went into administration in 2010 and a year later Shine Productions and MCD were able to buy three of the clubs for about £1.5m.

Northern Lights Dim

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, were seen by thousands of people along the north Donegal coast and in parts of Northern Ireland over the weekend and into the early hours of yesterday morning. However with mixed weather being forecast for the coming days it will probably be more difficult to see the colourful display. Astronomy Ireland advises those wishing to see the Aurora Borealis that the further north and away from city lights the better.
