Perseids observation report - David Moore

In near perfect conditions, near the Sugar Loaf mountain in County Wicklow, I saw 115 meteors in just over 2 hours !!!

An absolutely amazing night of Perseids.

Who would have guessed that after all that rain, the skies would clear, leaving near perfect conditions on the very night of maximum activity !!!

Here is my formal report, as requested on www.astronomy.ie/perseids08

All times are in BST for the night of 2008 August 12/13:

10min,1:05am - 1:15am 4-P 0-S ( 0% cloud)
15min,1:15am - 1:30am 2-P 1-S ( 0% cloud)
15min,1:30am - 1:45am 10-P 2-S ( 0% cloud)
8min,1:52am - 2:00am 8-P 0-S ( 0% cloud)
15min,2:00am - 2:15am 12-P 2-S ( 0% cloud)
15min,2:15am - 2:30am 13-P 1-S (20% cloud)
5min,2:40am - 2:45am 6-P 0-S ( 0% cloud)
15min,2:45am - 3:00am 18-P 0-S (20% cloud)
15min,3:00am - 3:15am 13-P 0-S (10% cloud)
15min,3:15am - 3:30am 7-P 2-S (10% cloud)
15min,3:30am - 3:45am 8-P 1-S (50% cloud)
15min,3:45am - 4:00am 4-P 1-S (70% cloud)

P is Perseid
S is Sporadic
% cloud is the percentage of my field of view obscured by cloud

Total count: 105 Perseids and 10 Sporadics. So Perseids were 10.5 times more abundant than sporadics.

Limiting magnitude was 6.0

Notes:
  1. The 86% Moon set at 1:34am so there was a bit of interference until then. This and lower radiant altitude meant lower rates.
  2. From before 2am until 3am we were seeing at least one meteor per minute! Great stuff!
  3. Within a minute or two of 3am a fireball behind clouds lit up the landscape! (mag -5 to -10? who knows?).
