Studying Winds from Red Giants with HST and FUSE

Lecture Report

Dr. Brian Espey, Trinity College Dublin
Monday 10 May 2010

The Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope
On Monday night the basement of the SNIAM building in Trinity College was packed to capacity to hear Dr. Brian Espey's talk on the effects of strongs winds from large stars. Guests were treated to amazing images of red giant stars, stars similar to our Sun which have reached the end of their lives.
Dr. Espey explained how these stars release significant amounts of processed gas which are vital to the next generation of stars and planets.

Few details of this process were known until a few years ago and Dr. Espey treated the audience to some of the results of his own extensive research using information and images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE).

Brian joined guests afterwards in the Lombard where discussions continued over some complimentary food.
