Up until the late 1920s nobody was sure where the Universe came from. One man, called Georges Lemaitre, came up with the theory of a rapid expansion of space, where the entire Universe was crammed into a tiny volume before expanding into what it is today. This theory later became known as the Big Bang Theory, and is currently the most widely accepted idea explaining the origins of the Universe.
So what happened at the Big Bang? How did all the stuff in the Universe fit into such a small space? What made the Big Bang happen in the first place? Dr Cormac O'Raifeartaigh from the Waterford Institute of Technology will give Astronomy Ireland's November lecture and will explain the life story of the entire Universe. Watch a brief video about the Big Bang HERE. |
