LISA - the first spaceborne gravitational wave observatory -
promises to revolutionise our understanding of some of the most exotic objects in the Universe.  LISA demands unprecedented precision of metrology over gigameter baselines and requires significant advances in a number of technology areas. In this talk the LISA mission will be presented, focusing on the anticipated science return, the measurement techniques, the current status of the mission design and progress, and on the LISA Pathfinder technology-demonstrator mission that will fly in 2010.

Biography
Harry Ward is a Senior Lecturer in Physics at the University of Glasgow. An experimental physicist, he has worked in the field of gravitational wave detection for over 30 years. After many years of contributing to the development of long-baseline ground-based insrtruments, he has moved over the last few years to working on interferometry developments aimed at LISA. He currently leads the Glasgow team responsible for building
the flight model Optical Bench that is a key component of the LISA Pathfinder mission.
