Summary -- William Rowan Hamilton is Ireland's greatest mathematician
and
one of the world's most outstanding mathematicians ever. He was born
in Dublin in 1805
and spent his early youth in Trim. He was appointed Astronomer Royal
of Ireland
at 22 while still an undergraduate! He searched for beauty in
mathematics and
yet his theories have turned out to be very powerful in the practical
world. This talk
will look at his life and work and is aimed at the general public.
Dr. Fiacre O'Cairbre is a Senior Lecturer in mathematics at NUI,
Maynooth. He has done research and published in the areas of
mathematics, physics, engineering and the history of science.
