International Year Astronomy

Nationwide Jupiter Watch

25 September 2009, 9pm

2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, and this is one of the many events being run by Astronomy Ireland.

On 25 September 2009, Astronomy Ireland will set up very powerful telescopes for a Nationwide Jupiter Watch. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System and is a stunning sight through any telescope. As you can see below, not only will its larger moons be visible, but the famous Great Red Spot, a storm hundreds of years old, will dominate the huge disk.

Astronomy Ireland is running Sky Watches all over the country on 25 September at 9:00pm where members of the public are invited to see these celestial bodies through some of our biggest telescopes. Our volunteers and coordinators will be available to answer any questions you have. The Sky Watches will take place in:

Cavan, Carlow, Cork, Donegal,
Dublin, Louth, Mayo, Sligo
