Study Astronomy

       STUDY ASTRONOMY IN IRELAND

A special education supplement produced by Nova Education for Astronom

y Ireland, coming out during Science Week (13 November).

Less than a decade ago school-leavers wishing to study astronomy had to go overseas, but happily that is no longer the case, with no fewer than eight universities offering degree and post-graduate courses in astronomy on the island of Ireland. Not only will these courses qualify the student for one of the most fascinating careers possible, but also the skills acquired in physics, mathematics and programming will make them highly-valued employees in a huge variety of industries.

Study Astronomy in Ireland is produced by Emmet Mordaunt, Astronomy Ireland's education officer and news editor of Astronomy & Space magazine. An inspirational science communicator, Mordaunt has communicated his love of astronomy to adults and children alike in both hemispheres for the past eight years. The great and the good of Irish astronomy are being consulted to bring the reader a comprehensive guide to pursuing a career that can literally reach the stars.

Topics covered will include -

  • Third level courses in Ireland
  • Third level courses abroad
  • The career-path of an astronomer
  • Present mysteries and future opportunities
  • Wider career-opportunities in science and engineering
  • Services for primary & secondary schools
  • Internet courses, teach yourself books & resources for the committed amateur

…and much more.

Study Astronomy in Ireland will be included with every copy of Astronomy and Space magazine (December issue, released 13 November), and will distributed free of charge to every senior entrant at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in January 2007. Copies will also be sent to the career guidance counsellor in every secondary school in the state.
