                        A Tale of Two Eclipses

In August there will be two eclipses, a solar eclipse August 1st (see below) and a lunar eclipse August 16th. Click HERE for details.

Stop Press- Report from our 5 Solar Eclipse Watches on August 1st.

After great media attention all week the Solar Eclipse watches went ahead on Friday morning August 1st.

Carlow: Gerry Moloney reports that it was completely cloudy, without even a break, on Mount Leinster where he held his watch.

Clare: Angus Sealy in Clare reported: "I hope you got at least some clear skys ... we hit it lucky! I was on Clare FM radio briefly, just before 10 o'clock, and a photographer came out and took some photographs of us (my wife and myself) watching through my home-made filter (yes, Astro Solar filter from the AI shop - made up to fit my 56x8 binoculars but for eclipse watching it works best on it's own)".

Dublin: Hundreds of people turned up to the Phoenix Park watch and were not disappointed.  While there were clouds most people got a great view especially earlier on.  Lots of people got to take photos of this amazing event.  The media were out in force with photographers from all the major newspapers in attendance.

Donegal: Seamus Byron set up his eclipse watch at the IT in Letterkenny.  While there was some cloud nevertheless most people got to view the event through frequent breaks in the cloud

Wexford: Oliver Gargan on Rosslare Strand reported total cloud cover for the duration of the eclipse with the skies only clearing when the event was over.

Once again we must caution readers in the strongest terms. Looking at the Sun without PROPER protection WILL result in SEVERE and IRREVERSIBLE eye damage. DO not look at the Sun with the naked eye or any optical equipment whatsoever, unless correct solar filters are used. A&S recommends 'AstroSolar'. This special filter material blocks all of the Sun's harmful rays allowing you to enjoy solar events in safety. Contact our shop for more information and to order. Call 01-847 0777 six days a week up to 5:30pm.

Astrosolar Filters

To protect your eyes we recommend sheets of Astrosolar Filter.  It is a relatively inexpensive way of protecting your eyes from being damaged by the Sun's rays.  Sheets can be easily adapted to cover your telescope or binocular lenses.  Buy HERE

NB: All events start at 9am on Friday August 1st
