Astronomy Ireland held Moon and Comet on Wednesday November 1 at 8pm. Comet SWAN is the latest comet to become visible in the night skies. Watches were organised in Louth, Dublin, Cork and Roscommon - reports below

The Moon of course is our nearest neighbour and is an amazing sight in a telescope or a pair of binoculars.

Cork, Ballyphehane Community Centre.

Martin Lynch reported clear skies.  About 20 people turned up on a cold night and got some good views of the moon.

Dublin, Phoenix Park.

Roughly 400 people turned up to clear skies and a wonderfull view of the Comet and the Moon. (pictures to follow)

Louth Comet Watch (report by Derek Watters)

Despite the short notice and freezing conditions, 9 people turned up for the watch which was held at Seabank, 5 miles South of Dundalk.  The comet was first observed with binoculars and then with telescopes. For some, it was their first comet, including 9 year old Adam, who "couldn't feel his legs" because of the cold!  Unfortunately a bank of cloud covered part of the sky but eventually dispersed.

Great views of the moon, Ring Nebula and Andromeda were had.  I provided a quick tour of the skies showing the various constellations, etc. We finished at 10pm, by which time temperatures had dropped close to minus 1 degrees. With Orion rising above the horizon. we cleared the ice off the cars and headed home for some much needed heat.
