Astronomy Ireland is delighted to announce its first Northern Lights Cruise along the Arctic coast of Norway. The voyage, in conjunction with Project Travel, will take place over six nights (plus one night in Oslo) from January 20th, 2012, giving you an amazing experience of a spectacular place on Earth, where the Sun does not rise.

We start our journey in Bergen, the gateway to the fjords, and continue northwards towards the Arctic Circle. We travel to the pretty Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, the medieval city of Trondheim and through the stunning Lofoten Islands. We explore the ‘Capital of Arctic Norway’, Tromsø, visit the most northerly point of mainland Europe and end in Kirkenes close to the Russian border.

Accompanying the tour is the renowned astronomer, Dr John Mason, who is a former President of the British Astronomical Association, and has appeared alongside Sir Patrick Moore on the BBC's The Sky at Night. Through a series of lectures and a guided tour of the Arctic night sky from the deck of the ship, Dr Mason will bring the world of stars, planets and meteors closer whilest also exploring the numerous myths and legends linked to the constellations in our skies
