                    Astro-Expo 2008 Report

This year's event took place on 8th November on two floors of the amazing Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin.  Expectancy was high on the lead into the event with lots of media attention from both radio and the national papers.  The weather forecast was not good for the day but this didn't deter the hundreds of people who showed to enjoy a great day of astronomy.

Alongside the main exhibition  the event had a series of three lectures which were very well attended.

1:00pm. 'The Wrath of Ra' (a lecture on the Sun and how it affects us) by Dr. James McAteer of NASA and TCD Astrophysics.

2:30pm. 'Celtic Rock - hunting for Asteroids' by Dave McDonald, David Grennan and Andreas Doppler.  Dave McDonald recently discovered the second asteroid from Ireland (2008 TM9) - the first was discovered from Markree Castle observatory, Sligo by Andrew Graham in 1848. This was closely followed by the discovery of a second asteroid by Dave Grennan from his observatory in Raheny.  Andreas Doppler assisted both with computer programming to determine the area of the sky to search for asteroids.

4:00pm. 'The Coming Space Power of China' by renowned space author and A&S contributor Brian Harvey.  The Chinese space program goes from strength to strength now with a space walk under their belts.  They are now considering a moon landing.

These lectures are also available to members nationwide on DVD, which you can order by credit card online HERE or by calling (01) 847 0777 (alternatively post a cheque or postal order to: Astro-Expo 2008 DVD, Astronomy Ireland, PO.
